An ingrown fingernail is one of the most common nail infections which is characterized by curved nails or presence of small corns around the nails. This infection is quite painful. That’s because the edge of the nail grows into the skin instead of away from it and causes the skin to break. While it occurs in both fingernails and toenails, the toenails are more commonly affected. Ingrown toenails causes severe pain and discomfort around the cuticle area of the nail and the discomfort associated with this condition becomes unbearable on wearing tight fitted footwear or when performing weight-bearing activities such as excessive walking. During walking, the pressure on the toes increases causing the ingrown nails to further push into the skin causing damage to skin tissues or a condition called necrosis.

The most common cause of ingrown fingernail or precisely ingrown toenail is the use of inappropriate footwear or shoes that do not have enough room for the toes. Another reason that can cause this condition, but which is less common is wearing a damp shoe. Therefore, special precautions have to be observed to keep your feet clean and dry at all times. You should also be cautious while cutting your nails as cutting nails shorter than the flesh around can cause a lot of pain and discomfort. Usually, the nails grow outward away from the skin. But in a situation of in-growth of nails, the nails grow inward towards the skin and the sharp edges break into the skin causing damage to the skin tissues. Not cutting the nails properly and at regular intervals causes them to grow inward into the soft tissues of the surrounding skin. Read more
