As mentioned in many of my previous articles as well as in numerous studies, one of the most common problems and biggest challenges in leading a natural lifestyle is finding skincare products that do not contain all the harmful and toxic substances and metals that endanger your health but do not sacrifice performance and functionality as well. The biggest challenge is deodorants. The majority of mainstream deodorants contain aluminum compounds and parabens and some are just disguised fragrances which makes finding a product under this category significantly difficult. A recent introduction into this market that may satisfy this specific need is the crystal deodorant. A crystal deodorant is made from naturally occurring salt crystals that are designed and have characteristics that prevent bacteria and armpit odor.

The reason a good natural deodorant is so hard to find these days is that even the supposedly branded organic deodorants being sold today include chemicals such as DEA, parabens and aluminum chemicals which has been known to be linked to cancer and Alzheimer’s. These brands probably spend more on marketing their product than actually using natural ingredients that would lessen and danger towards it users.

Following a number of health controversies over the past few years, experts are now recommending alternative deodorant products to use as part of a natural daily skin care routine.

Over the past ten years there have been numerous health scares that have occurred regarding the toxic and damaging ingredients used in deodorants. Many of these include the effects of parabens and aluminum compounds which are known to be very common ingredients in the majority of mainstream deodorants and antiperspirants. The worrying studies of the effects of these harmful substances and metals have begun to raise questions about the long term use of such products.

Unlike deodorants, antiperspirants do not mask the body odor using a fragrance but rather inhibits the perspiration from occurring in the sweat glands. The thing with antiperspirants is that they contain aluminum-based compounds which react with the sweat to produce a substance that plugs up the sweat ducts in order to prevent sweating. This prevents the sweat gland from functioning properly in excreting toxins and perspiring to cool the body’s temperature.

Does Diet Affect Body Odor? Stop Underarm Sweat

What this article will touch upon is a subject that’s relatively sensitive to many people and not talked about as much as it should be discussed: body odor. When this subject is brought up though, the majority of the time is used discussing the latest products and deodorants that can reduce perspiration or mask body odor. However, there are very few times where I have heard people discuss natural methods of achieving this goal. One example from the top of my head is altering your diet which can have a significant effect on your body odor. The link between the foods people choose to consume and the odor produced by their body is rarely discussed (if ever!) which is a shame as there are studies that have shown that there is a direct correlation between the two. With the vast amounts of people’s hard earned money spent each and every year on products such as antiperspirants and deodorants, it has always been a difficult to wrap my head around why discussions about the effect of your diet on body odor is almost non-existent.

First of all, it is important to grasp that the body odor is something that is heavily affected by what is excreted from your sweat glands. Also, your underarms are designed to perspire. No matter how simple that sounds there are people who still go to extreme lengths to prevent their underarms from sweating using deodorant and antiperspirant products, even though they contain harmful substances and metals that I discussed in my other articles. Apart from cooling your body, sweating plays a hugely important role in keeping your body healthy by excreting toxins from your body. So think twice next time before you plan on using antiperspirants regularly.

The popular belief of these two products is that they generally function in the same way – prevent body perspiration which inevitably eliminates the bad smell. However these two are very different in those aspects. While they do aim to reduce body odor one way or another, they go about very different ways in achieving this. Deodorants are used to mask odors that are caused by perspiration. It does this by using a combination of chemicals to produce a fragrance that aims to cover up the odor. Antiperspirants on the other hand, stop the body from perspiring by producing a thick substance that clogs up the sweat ducts which inhibits perspiration. As the bad smell is caused by bacteria interacting with sweat, the aim of antiperspirants is to take sweat out of the equation which is claimed to reduce body odor. To decide which product to go for, I suggest you figure out whether corporal odor or sweating is the bigger problem in your case.

If sweating is not your primary concern and your main worry is the odor your body produces, then your best option would be to go for the deodorant products. Deodorants work by using a strong fragrance that masks the odor of the sweat. It does not do anything to eliminate your body from actually perspiring. The thing with deodorants is that it utilizes ingredients that neutralize the odor by interacting with sweat whilst releasing antiseptic agents that help keep under control. One important reason why a lot of people opt for a deodorant is because it still allows the body to perform its natural function of perspiration whilst still keeping bodily odor to a minimum level.
